Fire Extinguisher Placement Rules: Distance, Height, Signs, and Access

Start with travel distance

For many Class A light hazards, the maximum travel distance is 75 feet. For many Class B hazards, it is 50 feet. These are common NFPA 10 (2022 Edition) figures, but hazard level, extinguisher rating, and local requirements affect the final layout.

Mount at a usable height

For extinguishers weighing less than 40 pounds, the top should be no more than 5 feet above the floor. Heavier units have a lower maximum mounting height. Keep the bottom at least 4 inches above the floor unless the unit is in a listed cabinet or otherwise protected.

• Use the listed bracket or cabinet.
• Keep operating instructions facing outward.
• Avoid locations exposed to impact, heat, or weather unless the unit is protected for that environment.

Make the location obvious

Use identifying signs where extinguishers are not plainly visible, especially above tall shelving, behind a door swing, or in a large open work area. Lighting and sightlines matter as much as the sign itself.

• Place units near normal paths of travel and exits when appropriate.
• Do not hide units inside offices or closets without clear marking.
• Check signs after ceiling work, display changes, or new racking.

Keep every unit unobstructed

3. 3Correct repeat problems — Mark floor space, adjust storage rules, or move the unit if daily operations keep blocking it.

Do not place a portable extinguisher where a person must reach through the likely fire area to retrieve it. Positioning should let people approach and retreat safely.

Review changes with a qualified provider

New cooking equipment, flammable liquid storage, battery charging, storage racks, or floor plan changes may require different protection. Review changes before occupancy or startup.
