Warehouse Fire Safety Tips for Racking, Forklifts, and High-Piled Storage
Warehouses combine large fuel loads, high ceilings, equipment traffic, and changing inventory. Fire protection has to keep up with the way goods are actually stored and moved.
Treat storage layout as a fire protection issue
Rack configuration, storage height, aisle width, commodity type, and plastic content can affect sprinkler design and the rules for high-piled storage. Do not assume a new product line fits the existing protection plan.
- Keep required sprinkler clearance below deflectors.
- Maintain designated flue spaces in rack storage where required.
- Document changes in commodity, packaging, or storage height.
Control forklift and battery-charging hazards
Forklifts can damage sprinkler piping, racks, extinguishers, and electrical equipment. Battery charging can introduce electrical, chemical, and hydrogen gas concerns depending on the battery type and setup.
Keep fire protection accessible
Pallets, receiving overflow, and parked equipment must not obstruct extinguishers, hose valves, electrical panels, exits, or sprinkler control valves. Mark protected spaces on the floor where recurring blocking is a problem.
- Include extinguishers and exits in daily floor walks.
- Report damaged sprinkler heads, pipe guards, or extinguisher brackets.
- Keep access roads and fire department connections clear outdoors.
Respond without creating another hazard
- 1Raise the alarm — Call 911 and start the building emergency procedure immediately.
- 2Stop equipment if safe — Park or shut down forklifts only if doing so does not delay escape.
- 3Evacuate by the planned route — Avoid smoke and do not travel under unstable racks or near a growing fire.
- 4Meet at the assembly point — Provide responders with information about stored commodities, batteries, chemicals, and missing persons.
A portable extinguisher may handle only a very small, early fire. Warehouse employees should not attempt to fight a fire involving rack storage, a vehicle, or a spreading pallet load.
Review with the AHJ when operations change
High-piled storage and sprinkler requirements are highly site-specific. Review permits, protection, and extinguisher placement with your Tennessee AHJ before increasing storage height or density.

- Can pallets block a fire extinguisher temporarily?
- No. Extinguishers and exit routes must remain accessible during normal operations.
