Protect the exits customers rely on

Merchandise, display fixtures, carts, and seasonal setups must not narrow or block required exit access. Walk the store from a customer’s perspective, including fitting rooms and rear areas.

• Keep exit doors unlocked and operable while occupied.
• Do not cover exit signs with banners or displays.
• Keep aisles, corridors, and exit discharge areas clear.

Manage stockrooms and receiving

Cardboard, plastic packaging, and dense stock can create a substantial fuel load. Keep storage orderly, maintain required sprinkler clearance, and separate stock from electrical panels and heating equipment.

Keep extinguishers visible and ready

Locate extinguishers where staff can reach them without entering the fire area. Verify signs remain visible after displays change and complete the monthly inspection at approximately 30-day intervals.

• Check the pressure gauge or other readiness indicator.
• Verify the pin and seal are intact.
• Keep the service tag current and report damage promptly.

Give staff clear jobs during an evacuation

1. 1Notify — Call 911 and activate the store’s emergency notification process.
2. 2Direct customers — Use the nearest safe exits and do not send people toward smoke or fire.
3. 3Sweep only if safe — Check assigned areas only when conditions are clear and do not delay your own exit.
4. 4Account outside — Meet at the assembly area and share information with responders.

Train new hires, managers, and seasonal staff. A written plan is useful only if people know where to go and who can make decisions.

Review after every reset

Store remodels, fixture moves, new merchandise categories, and holiday displays can change exit access and extinguisher visibility. Include fire safety in the opening checklist after each change.
