Monthly Fire Extinguisher Inspection Checklist for Business Owners

Assign the check and keep a record

Choose a trained employee to inspect each installed unit every month. Record the date, initials, unit location, and any corrective action on the inspection tag or your inspection log.

Look at access and location

• The extinguisher is in its designated location.
• The route to it is clear of boxes, displays, carts, and equipment.
• The wall sign is visible where required.
• The bracket or cabinet is secure and the unit is not on the floor unless specifically designed for it.

Check during normal business conditions. A unit that is accessible only before a delivery arrives is not reliably accessible when it may be needed.

Inspect the extinguisher itself

• The pressure gauge needle is in the operable range, if the model has a gauge.
• The pull pin and tamper seal are intact.
• The hose, nozzle, handle, cylinder, and label have no visible damage or obstruction.
• There is no leakage, corrosion, denting, missing label, or evidence of discharge.

For wheeled units and units without a gauge, follow the manufacturer’s inspection instructions. Do not judge readiness by weight alone unless the manufacturer specifies that method.

Act on deficiencies immediately

1. 1Mark the issue — Note the location, asset number if used, and the problem found.
2. 2Protect the location — Provide an appropriate replacement unit if the installed extinguisher is missing or out of service.
3. 3Request qualified service — Arrange repair, recharge, replacement, or evaluation promptly.
4. 4Document completion — Update the inspection record after the deficiency is corrected.

Keep the annual schedule visible

Review service tags while doing monthly checks. A unit may look normal yet be due for annual maintenance, a required 6-year internal examination, or a hydrostatic test.
